LET ME TELL you about Jay. A computer whiz (and a client), Jay used to sit on his butt in front of his monitor. Largely because of his lack of activity for at least 8 hours a day, Jay found himself registering 250 pounds on the scale.
My solution: I advised Jay to become the founding member of the "Tour d'office." Every hour on the hour throughout the day, Jay starts a brisk, 5-minute walk down the office corridors. He invites everyone to follow him - and they wind through the halls doing a snake dance.
It's not the type of thing that seems like exercise, but it is - very good exercise, I might add. See if you can do something similar without interrupting work too much. Snake through the halls. Dance around the cafeteria or in the parking lot. Bring along a portable CD player and blast Caribbean rhythms to spur everyone on.
Other ideas: Take pictures of all the fun and post them on the office bulletin board; set up (no-food) rewards for the people who participate consistently; and get the boss involved (good luck!).
BOTTOM LINE: Lose 24 pounds
If you follow Jay's plan and move at a brisk pace, you'll find yourself burning about 8 calories per minute; 40 calories in 5 minutes; 320 calories each work day; and 83,000 calories a year!
